“For additional protection against electrical fires 421.1.7”
AFDD is a new addition to the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations and have been included to provide protection against arc faults that can lead to electrically ignited fires. Arc Fault Detection Devices have been recommended for this purpose. There are requirements within the 18th Edition to protect against arching and burning, insulation faults, arcs, sparks and high temperature particles.
What are Arc Fault Detection Devices?
An AFDD is a circuit protection device that detects faults that MCB’s and RCD’s cannot detect.
What do the regulations say?
AFDDS are recommended for the purpose of providing additional protection against fire caused by arc faults in 230V AC final circuits. See 421.1.7 for further details.
Why use Arc Fault Detection Devices?
There were more than 13,500 fires reported in electrical distribution and electrical accessories last year. AFDDs are designed to detect faults that can lead to electrically generated fires and disconnect arc faults before ignition can occur.
Where should Arc Fault Detection Devices be used?
AFDDs should be fitted in consumer units or distribution boards in premises with sleeping accommodation, locations where there is a risk of fire due to the activity within, premises constructed of combustible materials, fire propagating structures such as high rising buildings and locations where there are irreplaceable goods. See 421.1.7 for further details.
What types of circuits can AFDDs be used on?
The regulations state 230v ac final circuits, that includes ring circuits, radials, spurs etc.
How do you test an AFDD?
AFDDs are tested by pressing the test button on the front of the device. AFDDS also self test every 24 hours and will automatically trip if a self test fails. Our single module arc fault detection device will self test every 15 hours.
