Space, There’s Plenty in Here

Installers will always tell you that space is a premium in consumer units. One of the reasons for this is that in many domestic households only have tight little spaces where the electrician is expected to fit the consumer unit with all of the protective devices that are necessary for a compliant, safe installation. Another reason is having enough wiring space inside the consumer unit to work quickly & comfortably.

So, how does Electrium help installers meet these demanding needs? Firstly by making compact consumer units, and secondly by miniaturising the devices that fit inside these compact units.

Compact Consumer Units

It might surprise you but an 11 Way consumer unit, for example, will measure just 241mm wide and 255mm high yet it will accommodate the 100A DP Main Switch, an SPD and 9 outgoing ways! In each of these ways the installer can fit Miniature RCBOs to easily meet the requirements for 30mA protection on each circuit and comply with the 18th Edition, but there’s more to miniature RCBO’s than that.

Miniature RCBOs

Miniature RCBOs are the same size as an MCB, yet they include switched neutral as standard! These two-pole switching devices incorporate Type A 30mA RCD technology with either B or C Curve MCB for overload & short circuit protection too. The two-pole switching facility not only provides total isolation of faulty circuits or equipment, it also allows for a safer maintenance environment and speeds up the installation testing process because there is no need to disconnect the outgoing cables for IR testing purposes, just switch off & test.

Miniature AFDDs

Miniature AFDDs include three protective devices in one compact single module size. There’s an MCB (B or C Curve) a Type A 30mA RCD, and an AFDD (arc fault detection device). These clever little devices detect arc faults that other devices cannot detect and provide a higher level of protection against electrical fires while also providing overload, short circuit & earth leakage protection, Miniature AFDDs include two pole switching for total isolation of any faulty circuit & equipment.

Miniature Circuit Breakers

Single module wide (18mm) miniature circuit breakers have been around for some time but only Electrium can offer you single module AFDDs, RCBOs & MCBs. Electrium devices provide the highest levels of protection in the smallest space. Allowing the installer more working space to make the task of installation quicker & easier.

Maximum Ways

Whichever your consumer unit is configured with MCBs, RCBOs or AFDDs alongside an SPD for overvoltage protection you can be certain that the maximum amount of outgoing ways is made available for household circuits & equipment when you choose single module devices from Electrium.

New Consumer Unit, New Work, New Standards of Safety

Replacing a consumer unit is classed as an alteration to the electrical installation. Alterations and additions are categorised as ‘new work’ and all new work on an electrical installation must be designed, installed, and verified in accordance with the current edition of BS 7671 IET Wiring Regulations*. The current edition is BS 7671 2018 Eighteenth Edition including Amendment 2.
